What is Surfynol (Acetylene glycol)?
Surfynol is a nonionic surfactant with a bilateral-symmetrical structure and an acetylene bond at the center of its molecule. It is used as an anti-foaming wetting agent in water-borne materials such as paints and inks.
Much focus is being placed on environmental issues, and many materials are being made water-borne. Due to these circumstances, attention is being paid to the functions of Surfynol, which is an indispensable additive for wetting, defoaming, and dispersing.
Surfynol's molecular structure is a very stable glycol with a low molecular weight. It is effective at significantly lowering surface tension. Furthermore, Surfynol has a very wide range of material applications. When used for coatings, Surfynol surfactants evaporate out during the baking process.

Variations
Surfynol 104 series
The Surfynol 104 series, with a basic Surfynol structure, has both wetting and anti-foaming functions. This series products that have been diluted by a variety of solvents such as ethylene glycol. Depending on application, powder types and types with enlarged hydrophobic groups are available.

Surfynol 400 series
This series contains Surfynol 104 with added ethylene oxide, and is liquid at room temperature. Depending on the added amount of ethylene oxide, the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance changes, as does water solubility.

Self-emulsifying type
Combining Surfynol with other surfactants gives these products improved water solubility. The CT series corresponds to this type, excluding SurfynolSE, SE-F, and some of the products which are used as dispersion auxiliary agents.

Wetting agent
Surfynol's superior wettability is highly evaluated for its ability to improve the coatability of water-borne coatings to base materials. It is unique for its anti-foaming abilities and retention of low-dynamic surface tension. In light of these functions, Surfynol can be applied to water-borne coatings such as electro-deposit coatings, can coatings, etc., as well as water-borne inks such as gravure and flexographic inks. Surfynol has also been highly evaluated as a superior wetting agent for the development of water-borne materials in various fields.
Anti-foaming agent
Surfynol is a superior anti-foaming agent with the ability to instantaneously remove fine bubbles suspended in a system. Surfynol can dissolve not only bubbles on liquid surfaces but also pinholes caused by bubbles inside liquids such as spray coats and roll coats. Furthermore, Surfynol is not adversely affected by phenomena such as repellence or the low adhesion usually caused by silicone anti-foaming agents, but makes the development of re-coatable materials possible.
Pigment dispersing agent
For the dispersion of pigments for paints, inks, and other materials, Surfynol can be used independently as a dispersing agent or dispersing aid for organic or inorganic pigments. Surfynol's functions include removing foam from pigment surfaces and improving the wettabililty of dispersing agents. When Surfynol is applied as a dispersing aid, the color development of coating films can also be substantially improved and both dispersion and paint manufacturing can be improved as well.
